Komme nicht wieder / Won’t be back soon

A sign – with slightly altered message – hung at the entry door of the Kunstverein Leipzig building: “Won’t be back soon“. Most visitors only discovered it in hindsight or when it was pointed out to them. The sign referred to the exhibition’s title, Space of the present, on various levels: 1. physical absence of the artist; 2. the refusal to participate in a prolonged fragmented and unredeemed presence; 3. the artist hoping to get away from problems he wouldn’t be able to solve with art; 4. escaping the contemporary constraint of staging oneself to be successful.

If absence - as a game of art- is no real absence, is dropping out of the world by means of an artistic performance then still art?
